International Women’s Day

Throughout history, countless women have made significant contributions to society in various fields, including literature, fashion, acting, and social causes. Their achievements and impact on society paved the way for generations of women to come. Additionally, black women have made incredible contributions to society, despite facing discrimination and systemic racism, these women persevered and left their mark on the world. In this article, we will briefly cover some of the greatest women in history in these fields.


Literature


Toni Morrison is a name synonymous with literary excellence. Born in 1931, Morrison was the first black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for her novels, including “Beloved” and “The Bluest Eye.” Her writing explored the experiences of black people in America, often focusing on the intersection of race, gender, and identity. Morrison’s work was influential in shaping the literary canon and inspired a generation of black writers.


Jane Austen is widely considered one of the greatest authors in the English language. Her novels, such as Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, have become classics, beloved for their wit, humor, and insight into human nature. Austen’s writing was groundbreaking in portraying women as complex, intelligent, and capable of making their own decisions. Her influence on literature is immeasurable, and her works continue to inspire readers and writers alike.


Fashion Design


Zelda Wynn Valdes was a pioneering fashion designer who broke barriers in the industry. In the 1940s, Valdes opened her own boutique in New York City, where she designed clothes for celebrities and high-society clients. She was the first black designer to open a boutique on Broadway and was known for her glamorous, form-fitting designs. Valdes’ legacy continues to inspire designers today, and her impact on the industry cannot be overstated.


Coco Chanel is a name synonymous with elegance and style. Born in France in 1883, Chanel revolutionized the fashion industry with her designs that were characterized by simplicity, practicality, and elegance. She is credited with popularizing the “little black dress” and introducing a new style of clothing that was more comfortable and practical than the restrictive fashions of the time. Chanel’s legacy continues to inspire designers today, and her brand remains one of the most iconic in the world.


Acting


Viola Davis is one of the most accomplished and talented actresses of our time. She has won numerous awards, including an Oscar for her performance in “Fences,” and is known for her ability to bring complex characters to life on screen. Davis has also been an advocate for diversity and inclusion in Hollywood, using her platform to raise awareness about the issues faced by black women in the industry.


Meryl Streep is one of the most talented and versatile actresses of our time. She has received numerous accolades for her work, including three Academy Awards, and is known for her ability to bring complex characters to life on screen. Streep has been a trailblazer for women in Hollywood, advocating for greater representation and opportunities for women in the industry. Her talent and advocacy inspired a generation of actresses to follow in her footsteps.


Social causes


Harriet Tubman is one of the most iconic figures in American history. Born into slavery in the early 1820s, Tubman escaped to freedom and became a leading abolitionist, humanitarian, and suffragist. She is best known for her work as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, leading hundreds of slaves to freedom. Tubman’s courage, determination, and dedication to the cause of freedom continue to inspire activists and advocates today.


Rosa Parks is best known for her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which helped spark the civil rights movement in the United States. In 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger, an act of defiance that led to her arrest and became a symbol of the fight for racial equality. Parks’s bravery and activism helped inspire a generation of civil rights leaders and advocates, and her legacy continues to inspire those fighting for social justice today.


Women and many others like them have made invaluable contributions to society in their respective fields. Their impact and legacy continue to inspire and influence generations, and their names will be remembered as some of the greatest in history. It is important to recognize and celebrate women’s achievements, as their stories and experiences are often ignored or erased from mainstream narratives.


I hope all of these women help you to be inspired by other women, but I want to make it clear that there are many incredible and inspiring women out there. There are women around us and you don't need to look for women outside your circle to be inspired. I'm sure the women you meet today are wonderful and help you to be better. Value them too and not just those who are well known.
